When Your Kids Push Your Buttons: The Newsletter by Bonnie Harris, M.S.Ed. Issue 36 - Summer Newsletter Greetings! I'm doing things a little differently this month as I am down to the wire finishing the draft my new book which is due the first of August. I don't have the time to do a full newsletter but wanted to at least connect and let you know what was going on. And as it is mid-summer, I'm sure you're all busy, too, with summer activities, kids programs, camp, etc. Let me know what comes up for you this summer. Are you keeping your expectations realistic? I remember one summer when I wanted my son to go to camp, and he REALLY didn't want to. I thought I had to find a way to make it wonderful for him as it had been for me. But he (and he was my easy one!) dug in his heels and resisted mightily. Fortunately, my parenting mentor was visiting and I presented my dilemma to her. "How do I get him to want to go to camp?" She said simply, "Why does he have to go to camp?" I suddenly realized that camp was my agenda and I had to let go. I thought he would miss out on such wonderful stuff, but he in fact found wonderful stuff in other ways-ways that worked for him. So keep aware of your agendas, your projections, and let your kids live THEIR own lives, not extensions of yours. Have a wonderful rest of the summer, send questions, and look for your newsletter next month about this time.
